Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
A urinary tract infection is diagnosed by getting a urine sample and checking for white blood cells, red blood cells, or bacteria. The sample must be collected properly to avoid contamination.
A urine culture is also used in diagnosis. The urine is tested in the lab to determine which antibiotic will work best to treat the infection. This testing usually takes one to three days.
A urinary tract infection is an infection in the urinary system to include the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra.
These infections are so common, that nearly 40% of all women will have a urinary tract infection in their life and around 12% of all men will suffer from one. Urinary tract infections aren’t always symptomatic and if they aren’t, then they may go away on their own. However, if they are symptomatic then they can cause a variety of symptoms.
Common symptoms of a urinary tract infection:
- A strong urge to urinate.
- A burning sensation during urination.
- Small amounts and frequency during urination.
- Urine that looks cloudy, red, or discolored.
- Strong smelling urine.
- Pelvic pain in women.
What is the Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections?
Antibiotics are typically the go-to treatment for urinary tract infections. The type of antibiotics that are prescribed will depend on the bacterium that has colonized your urinary tract system. The bacterium can be found through a simple urine test. Prescriptions are commonly used to treat urinary tract infections. Usually, symptoms clear up within the first few days of treatment but it’s important to continue to take your antibiotics until the prescription is finished. If your symptoms are very uncomfortable then your doctor may also prescribe pain medicine to help give you some relief.
