What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Fast Pace Health Orthopedics is able to provide injections of Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, produced from your own blood. This type of stimulated platelet injection can help the healing process of joints and injured tissue. These platelets are the cells in our body that contain growth factors, e.g. the same way that your skin heals after a cut or scratch, but with a much higher concentration.

With the Fast Pace Health PRP service, the concentrate of platelets and white blood cells from your blood is introduced directly into acute or chronic injuries. Fast Pace Health Orthopedics aims to heighten the body’s natural healing ability and produce a rapid, efficient, and thorough restoration of tissue.

Some patients report healing of more than 50% improvement in 6 weeks and up to 100% improvement in 12 weeks. This may eliminate the need for more aggressive and expensive treatment options such as long-term medication or surgery. In addition, Fast Pace Health PRP is a minimally-invasive procedure that is done in your local urgent care clinic or nearby referral area; therefore, you go home the same day.

Treatment Process
Following a formal evaluation from a Fast Pace Orthopedic Provider, an individualized treatment plan will be established. A full explanation of the procedure including risks and benefits will be reviewed.

Upon approved evaluation, the process will begin with common blood draw from your arm or from a bone marrow aspiration in the back of your hip region, and the withdrawn sample will be placed in a special processing unit, which separates platelets, white blood cells, and serum from red blood cells into a concentrated collection for injection.

The skin and soft tissue are anesthetized. Then, using a small amount of your “activator” blood draw and the collected PRP syringe, the injection will be administered into the tissue targeted for treatment. Depending on the size of the injured tissue, one or several instances may be needed to optimize the placement of the PRP.

Following injection sessions, soreness is commonly felt at the site of injury for several days as the treatment process takes place. Soreness will gradually decrease as healing and tissue repair occurs.

Your Fast Pace Health Orthopedic Provider will inform you of acceptable over the counter medication for pain, such as Tylenol. Anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and Aspirin must be avoided following PRP treatments. These medicines may block the effects of the intended healing response.

Heavy lifting and strenuous activities are to be avoided directly following treatment for several days as healing periods take place.

A treatment regiment may require one to three appointment(s) for the duration of care. Follow-up PRP treatment with your Fast Pace Health Orthopedist will be scheduled for your convenience as part of the original evaluation plan.

At each visit, an evaluation of your response to the initial therapy is performed and a decision is made regarding the need for additional PRP treatment(s). In general, chronic injuries often require more than one injection.
